Research

At the institutes of the faculty as well as at the central scientific facilities of the university associated with the faculty, research is conducted both in the field of basic research and with a focus on application. Due to the wide range of research areas, the research groups are also linked to numerous research institutions inside and outside the university.

Research and Teaching Facilities

Institute of Inorganic Chemistry

Research at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry (ACI) concentrates on Investigation of molecular compounds on the basis of main- and subgroup elements and the detailed elaboration of structure-property relationships.
These fundamental insights provide the basis for the development of sustainable catalysts and materials and for the realization of new technologies.

Institute of Organic Chemistry

The research foci at the Institute of Organic Chemistry (OCI) are in the fields of molecular chemistry (method development; polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons; catalysis), supramolecular chemistry (functional miniproteins; functional cage structures; carbon-based acceptor molecules) and on macromolecular chemistry (2D, 3D and 4D materials; functional materials; peptide materials).

Institute of Physical Chemistry

The main research areas of the Institute of Physical Chemistry (PCI) include dynamic processes in functional materials, charge transport and light-matter interaction, theoretical chemistry & molecular quantum dynamics, molecular processes at interfaces, biophysical chemistry, ultrafast spectroscopy and microscopy as well as radiochemistry.

Institute of Geography

At the Institute of Geography research is conducted in the fields of physical geography and human geography. The main topics are
geomorphology and soil geography, geoinformatics and 3D geodata processing, hydrogeography and climatology, geography of South Asia and geography of North America as well as economic and social geography.

Institute of Earth Sciences

The research at the Institute of Earth Sciences focuses on the fields of solid earth (including mineralogy, petrology, isotope geology and sedimentology), cosmochemistry, environmental geochemistry, palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimate research, palaeontology and archaeometry.

Research Groups at the Faculty

Selected Projects of the Faculties Top Level Research

N-Heteropolycycles as Funcional Materials

The research network with 17 sub-projects focuses on the development of new organic semiconductors and the investigation of the elementary processes of charge transport that determine their properties.

Mixed Ionic-Electronic Transport: From Fundamentals to Applications

The research training group funded jointly with the University of Stuttgart includes research groups from the fields of chemistry, physics and engineering. It is investigating how ions and electrons interact with each other in organic, hybrid and nanostructured materials and how these interactions can be utilised for new functionalities, for example in bioelectronics.

Habilitation

“Privatdozentin” and “Privatdozent”

On the basis of a successful habilitation, the teaching authorization for a specific academic subject or subject area as well as the title “Privatdozentin” or “Privatdozent” is awarded.
